Fluke fisherwoman denied world record by Judy Peet Wednesday September 19, 2007, 7:16 PM Monica Oswald, the Neptune nurse who was savaged in online discussion groups after she caught the largest summer flounder ever brought in with a rod and reel, has been denied a place in the record books. The International Game Fish Association said today that Oswald broke IGFA rules in August when she briefly rested her pole on the rail of her boat while wrestling with a 24.3-pound fluke off the coast of Monmouth County. "The tackle, the line, the leader and the (fishing) method were fine, but the rules specifically state you can't rest the rod," said IGFA world records coordinator Rebecca Wright. "It's unfortunate, because it was an outstanding catch, but rules are rules." Summer flounder, a.k.a. fluke, is the most sought-after game fish on the eastern seaboard. Oswald's fish would have broken the world record set in 1975, and could have brought her six-figure endorsement deals. Ever since her catch, however, anonymous posters on Internet fishing forums claimed she cheated and did not catch the fish herself. Oswald even took a lie detector test. The results were posted online this week. She passed.
Al McReynolds pulled this World Record Striped Bass from the Atlantic fishing at night off the Vermont Ave. Jetty in Atlantic City following days of September Nor'easter storming in 1982. The fish was taken on a 5-1/2" long Rebel Black-back Silver Minnow Plug on 20 lb. test line. It took an hour and 40 minutes to land the fish on the slippery jetty. The fish measured 53" in length and 34-1/2" in girth, and was estimated to be twenty to twenty-two years of age. Its 78 lbs. 8 oz. weight earned it the IGFA all-tackle record!

Thats right folks!!! Shore Catch Guide Rich Swisstack guided client Dave Alu to this 19 pound 12 ounce MONSTER last night. Dave Alu caught the giant fish last night while I was guiding him from the beach. We had about 6 bass three over 40 inches, and then in the wee hours of the morning this monster ate Dave’s Chunk. I couldn’t believe my eyes when he slid it on the beach. We both thought that it was a nice bass until I grabbed it in the surf. The fish weighed 19 lbs. 12 ozs. at the Tackle Box 4 hours later. My Evalution lip gripper weighed the fish at over 19 lbs. so I knew we had something special. As I finding out it may be more special then we think. I have to do some further research, it is right now a pending World Record, not only the NY state record. I send you more as I find out more! Capt. SWISS
I believe my father and I were on the boat in 1953 when Walter Lubin caught the still standing NJ State Record Fluke (19lbs. 12 oz.). I believe the boat's name was Thunderbird, and she ran out of Wildwood Crest. The captain of the boat caught the fish on the mate's rod. I may be mistaken as to the name of the person who caught the fish because it happened such a long time ago. I can't remember any names. But I remember the fish very well, and when it was weighed at the dock, it weighed at least 20 lbs. I was a little short of seven years of age. If anyone knows how I can get more information or a photo of Walter Lubin and/or his fish, please contact me. Thanks, John Moore
